At a border they crossed when they were young,

the Greeks inspected the packages only of the Turks, left brown paper

hanging in shreds, twine limp, sweets and personal effects exposed.

And on the way back, the Turks charged entry fees

they claimed were Greek and kept everyone waiting for hours.

Neither Greek nor Turkish, she remembers only how angry she was,

and that she refused to pay.

Now at the border between waking and sleep, she lies

like a mountain range heaved from the earth to prevent

crossings. She’ll betray his trust, whisper his secrets to the Persians.

And even when he runs out into the fray in grayed-out underwear,

vulnerable to enemy fire if it might mean ultimate peace, she’ll linger awhile in the trenches, muzzle loaded and trained on

his sorry heart. Only under cover of night will she gather the air-dropped
